Typical budget swimmer cut plates use a monolithic ceramic core. Monolithic cores work great for 1-2 hits but the entire ceramic strike-face will degrade rapidly with any follow-up shots. Using tiles limits the surface area that is degraded with each shot.
Additionally, we have had these plates lined with a polyurea coating for long-term care and extra protection.
